Lady Gaga, Amazon Cloud marketing strategy 99 cents CD and WOM What I don't like about Lady Gaga perfect voice

This past week Amazon and Lady Gaga married (Marry the Night?) for one of the best marketing strategies I've ever encountered.

For years I have explained to people Amazon owns cloud computing storage. In May the cloud went down, challenging its viability; as well as messing up PlayStation for Sony.

Along came Lady Gaga and a 99 cent CD sale of Born This Way. If you bought the CD, you got like a five year free trial of the cloud. You can tell I passed on the deal.

Amazon paid $8.40 for the 99 cents CD I purchased, according to Billboard.

While Amazon tied in with what is probably today's #1 recording artist, Lady Gaga got something in return.

You can tell by the Billboard article, Lady Gaga's Born This Way will be the #1 CD on Tuesday (May 31, 2011).

Lady Gaga also benefits. It creates WOM - word of mouth, the greatest marketing tool ever known to mankind.

My personal believe is this 21st Century marketing tool (formerly public relations) has established Gaga for the next 15 years. Hard to believe, but Britney Spears has sustained her career for an even dozen years now and has no sign of letting up. Put Gaga in the Britney, Madonna stratosphere.

Again, personally believe Gaga's Born This Way is unstoppable throughout June (2011), and will be able to withstand new releases by Beyonce, Selena Gomez and Dolly Parton.

By the end of June, Gaga will add somewhere from a million to five million to her net worth, and that's not counting the song writing $. That, my friend, is true marketing in the 21st Century.

Now what I don't like about Gaga. Nit picking. Here voice is too perfect. In the days when people like Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez use vocal "sweeteners" to enhance their vocals, and keep them in tune, Lady Gaga sounds like she's been trained extensively in vocals.

Listening to Born This Way at the gym this morning, it hit me. There's no machine between her voice, the microphone and the recording device. Not even Taylor Swift can make that claim. It's like someone who lives off junk food. If you feed them quality diets of vegetables and other good food, they're going to get sick. My problem with Gaga's vocals.

Lastly, would like to introduce Kareem "Jesus" Devlin, guitarist extraordinaire from my favorite Born This Way song, Electric Chapel.

Taylor Swift releases her fourth CD, if you include the holiday CD, in October in time for the holiday buying frenzy. Yes, she will be #1 Billboard hot albums in November.

She started 2010 on a concert tour that sold out in 2009 in less than 12 minutes. Expect the same this year as history repeats itself for Ms. Swift.

She'll be 21 in 2011. She's been on the charts non-stop since 2007. How many artists can claim that?

Swift follows in the wisdom of many other artists. As soon as one single peaks on the chart and is waning, she releases another. Unlike other artists, I've yet to hear a bad, or sound-alike, single from Swift. I don't know how she does it.

My advice would be milk about five songs out of Speak Now CD, a duet with maybe her idols, The Dixie Chicks, or whatever they are now, as she had done in the past with Boys Like Girls, Colbie Caillat, a couple movie tunes, like she did with Valentine's Day.

For 2011, after the spring and summer tour, I recommend a greatest hits package. Do like The Beatles did with the red and blue albums - two different albums. Don't combine them. No rhyme nor reason for songs on the two, just two greatest hits CDs. I recommend Left and Right. Confuse people. Hands, body parts or since 2012 is election year....

Then pull a George Jones. Announce the 2012 hiatus tour. KISS has been on a farewell tour for 10 years. How long ago did Cher do her farewell tour; The Eagles? Swift is not stupid. Do a hiatus tour. Lay low, maybe acting gigs, until 2015. Let all the music begin to creep off the charts - then bam, summer of 2015 another CD and 2016 tour, announced in 2015 - instant sellout.

Selena Gomez' Round & Round fell to #3 from #1 on Radio Disney this week. Gomez is an ideal 21st Century music marketer, like her equally as talented contemporary, Taylor Swift. Just this week Gomez released a new single, Year Without Rain.

Swift does the same; as soon as one single fizzles, have another in the wings. Britney Spears used to use that tactic. Even The Beatles and Elvis Presley, so it is nothing new.

Let's say you're a retail store marketing to the Tween market (roughly 8 to 14 years old). You need your market research. If I run a contest, would it be wiser to use Miley Cyrus' new CD or the Jonas Brothers' new CD for a tie-in?

One of Marketing Sociologist's blogs is Tween Music. I'm an advocate of measurement. Matter of fact, it was my means of measuring public relations coverage that today has been bastardized into what people mistakenly call ROI (Return on Investment - but a story in the media is not a return. It's a misnomer to call it ROI).

I love Google Analytics because it is a great marketing measurement tool. Same with Adsense if you know how to utilize it - few do. Combined together, you have a powerful information tool that will provide some solid data on where your market is heading. Knowledge is power.

The Internet is a wonderful place for marketing and it gets better daily. Readers, I'd appreciate your input on what marketing measurement tools there are for SmartPhone apps and where do I find them? Thank you in advance. Please leave it in comments.

So with my Internet market research tools, I can tell you Miley Cyrus' future is as dim as her protege, Hilary Duff. Yet the Jonas Brothers are still shining as brightly as Tailor Swift. Something I predicted a year ago on gut feeling but now have the research to prove it. Miley Cyrus' recent CD sold 66 percent less than her first CD in the same time span. No figures available yet for the new JoBro CD. Maybe next week.

The numbers from my Analytics and Adsense tell me I get more visitors on Tween Music from the Jonas Brothers - almost double - than when I mention Miley Cyrus. Ironically, the Tween market is not that into either of their TV shows, but focuses on their music and videos. After all, the Tween market is not about television.

More than a year ago I told you about first run movies over SmartPhones and why the FCC vacated the broadcast band for this function. Today you're seeing the first of it. This trend will escalate for more than a decade. Trust me if you didn't listen last year.

That's why the Tween market is not showing up on television numbers. Why wait for the next episode of Hannah Montana Forever when I can watch it a week before it airs on YouTube over my SmartPhone?

When I heard the first minute of this song, didn't recognize the voice. Thought is was another clone ripping off Ke$ha's sound, much like everything in Disney's Hollywood Records stable sounds like someone else - like how on Make A Wave, Demi Lovato sounds just like Miley Cyrus, who sounds like Hilary Duff on much of her early Hannah Montana work.

First her We Belong to the Music collaboration with Timbaland fails to chart. Same with Nothing to Lose with Bret Michaels. This weekend Miley Cyrus' first acting effort outside the Hannah Montana franchise, The Last song, bombed so bad it makes I Love You Beth Cooper look like a blockbuster.

The Last Song came in fourth, behind Clash of the Titans, Tyler Perry's Why Did I get Married Too? and How to Train Your Dragon. The disturbing part is it opened on a Wednesday, two days before a movie normally premiers, including Beth Cooper, and it netted only $16-million. Beth Cooper opened in fifth place and netted $20-million without the extra two days.

Hope Ms. Cyrus saved some of that money she made last year. Ask Hilary Duff, or the musical act 78violet, what happens when your career tanks (Aly & AJ have moved on to acting, it appears. Even if 78violet were resuscitated, they have lost their following.). It was Nov., 2008 I predicted this happening to Cyrus.

In six weeks, Susan Boyle has destroyed 20th Century marketing. In the next week or two, Billboard will be announcing its album of the year.

Taylor Swift has had Fearless on the charts the entire year. She toured her tail off (unfortunately did not make Top 10 concerts of the year). Was in the Jonas Brothers and other movies. Yet Boyle, who has had her CD out since Thanksgiving, will beat Swift for CD of the year.

How did Boyle do it? A little thing called YouTube. In 2007, I was thrown out of offices for suggesting YouTube & MySpace presence instead of press releases. Boyle's success is directly from YouTube. You can not turn on a newscast without seeing a YouTube related story.

Today I am advocating SmartPhone apps; getting the same reactions from companies as when I advocated YouTube. You wonder why the economy is bad? 20th Century thinking management!

John Fields – a music guy I wasn’t aware of

As a music journalist, including for the biggest music trade, Billboard, I’ve known many back end people; producers, concert promoters, song writers, even roadies.

Today I was listening to Selena Gomez’ Disappear and it hit me – Hall & Oates. When I did my research, it wasn’t Hall & Oates; it was a guy name of John Fields – a production guy.

He has been credited with Jonas Brothers Don’t Speak, Hollywood, and Paranoid. Miley Cyrus’ 7 Things and Brandi Carlile Throw it All Away. He about owns Demi Lovato: Believe in me, Everytime you lie, Falling over me, Moves me, Party, Remember December, The Middle and U Got Nothin’ On Me. He produced Jon McLaughlin Beating My Heart.

Question is, did he really write Disappear, or get credit for being the producer? Found his discography, but Disappear doesn’t appear on it. Hope Mr. Fields sees this post, leaves a comment and gets in touch. This guy truly is MAGIC. Besides producing Tween hits, he can do something Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato, Jonas Brothers and Selena Gomez can’t do – walk down the street without being bothered.

Was listening to AOL Radio this morning. Heard a Miley Cyrus tune I thought FANTASTIC. Turns out it was on the new Timbaland CD I was not aware of – Shock Value II. Had not heard it on traditional radio. I had heard the Justin Timberlake tune from the CD a month ago – thought it sucked.

Went to Amazon. Saw a used CD for $3.99. Then I checked out the download price - $5. I had purchased Tiffany Giardina’s CD the same way, for like $3.

So, I was exposed to a song via Internet radio, picked it up for about shipping costs or local taxes online. This is how you market music in the 21st Century.

By the way, think this is the BEST song Cyrus has done – of course I’m partial to Timbaland.

I also like Amazon better than iTunes. QuickTime messes up Windows based programs for some reason. If you use iTunes, you must download QuickTime. iTunes has Shock Value II for $12.99, another reason I like Amazon. Got most of Miley Cyrus The Time of Our Lives free due to Amazon promo codes.

I’ve been waiting for this report! Top box office acts for 2009 tours followed last year trends of oldies acts. U2, Madonna, Springsteen, AC/DC and Fleetwood Mac were the top touring acts in 2009 according to Billboard.

P!nk, who toured her butt off and Twitter-ed about it, placed five with $102-million.

Jonas Brothers came in with $73-million.

Miley Cyrus didn’t place in the top 10, being topped by Kenny Chesney, Fleetwood Mac, Coldplay, Dave Matthews Band and Dutch violinist/composer Andre Rieu (don’t ask me). Yet Cyrus came in first for the Thanksgiving holidays, netting more than $6-million from Nov. 24 to Dec. 2. That was Charolette, N.C.; Nashville, Tenn.; Columbia, S. Car.; Atlanta, Tampa and Miami.

For those who didn’t believe Cyrus makes $1-million per show, in the Mick Jagger league, do the math, as Hilary Duff said.

Arizona is popular in late fall for motivational speakers. Last weekend I attended an event where the speaker wanted to transform my mind to millionaire status and this weekend the king of motivational speakers, you saw him in a Jack Black movie, is right near my home. He thinks it's Scottsdale according to his Tweets, but it is Phoenix!

I love motivational speakers, but the one last weekend got to me. He was telling us how he only travels first class and how millionaires demand that. Then I looked at the seats in the hotel ballroom this speaker, plus the one this weekend in Northeast Phoenix, have their attendees sit in. These are chairs designed for a two hour wedding reception, not 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. for three to five days.

That's when it dawned on me how much these motivational speakers REALLY disrespect you and only want their hands on your wallet. These seminars cost about $5,000. The motivational speaker trying to reach my mind was explaining how he negotiated a Huntington Beach hotel for $4,000. I've had conferences at hotels and was able to get the ballroom free for promising X amount of hotel rooms sold - plus free snacks and coffee. Last weekend I had neither for 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Either these motivators are idiots - at which point you should not be listening to them - or they're pissing on you in the respect department. Phoenix has some fine theaters. I saw Jeff Beck at Phoenix Symphony Hall in downtown. Cost on that is $1,300 per day, plus it seats more than 2,000. The millionaire guy had 700 in attendance. Think of how comfortable we would have been over his three day seminar if he hadn't cheaped out.

Down the street is the historic Orpheum Theater, 1,300 plus seats at $1,400 per day. If you want prestigious, try Scottsdale's Virginia G. Piper Theater. It only seats 800 plus, costs $1,500 per day, but it's ACTUALLY in Scottsdale. Saw Ray Davies of the Kinks there. Had the Beat Angels sit right in front of me.

As I was writing this, it dawned on me. All the motivational speakers, from Wayne Dyer to Zig Zigler, are men. Where's the women motivational speakers who do the circuit through Arizona?

Addendum: Heard from some motivational speakers who contend if you have comfy seats, the audience may fall asleep. Okay. Now let's look at it from a marketing standpoint. Customer is ALWAYS king. One-third of your customers are going to be baby-boomers. You put baby-boomers on a stool-like seat for more than a couple hours, you've got hemorrhoidal issues. You want to cause your customer discomfort? Go for the plushy auditorium seats and use a water gun to keep those wayward audience members awake - use luke warm water!

You may be able to talk 15 hours a day (something I've never understood how), but those hemorrhoids won't wait that long.

Notice how ALL the 2009 Winter awards shows have snubbed Disney stars? Last night the Grammy Award nominations were announced. Jonas Brothers, Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato, Ashley Tisdale, and if you include Bandslam, Aly & AJ and Vanessa Hudgens all ignored. All had products released in 2009 that qualified for vote.

What about the FORMER-reigning pop princess, Miley Cyrus? Surely she got a nomination - yes, she did. The Climb was nominated, drum roll please, for Best Song Written for Motion Picture, Television or other Visual Media.

Disney did score similar nominations for the movie Up, but since that was animated, doesn't impact the tween market.

Disney was snubbed at the American Music Awards, too. Goodbye, Mr. Mouse stars. We'd like you to meet the 30-ton gorilla, we call her Taylor Swift. Swift has managed to sell out in minutes all her 2010 concert tickets, something Cyrus could not accomplish in ANY market in 2009.

This is how you market. I’ve had dozens of bad bands requesting an add on MySpace recently.

I’m exclusive. I’ve turned down some pretty good musicians. You have to be TOP NOTCH to be on my MySpace. You have to understand 21st Century marketing.

Tonight I got an e-vite from Lovesick Radio. Last band I heard this good were Tempe’s The Maine. Lovesick Radio blows them away.

If one of my heroes, Rick Derringer, is not one of their influences, I don’t know music. Yes, they’ve studied the hair bands and updated it for the 21st Century.

They’re doing the right things. Their MySpace songs are less than 90 seconds (except for one). They put their videos up on YouTube. If they are as Building the Band Brand cognizant with 21st Century technology, they’ll learn about this post by searching their name (and having a Google notification sent) daily at Twitter and blogsearch.google.com.

Believe they’re already on Last.fm. Way to go, guys. You’re doing all the right things. I love your sound – harkens back to my youth. Let me know when you’re playing the Sonoran desert. Want to see your act live. Bet you’re great. Who would get top bill, you or Emily Osment? That’d be a show I’d pay Jonas Brother or Miley Cyrus money to see!

Only one complaint. After watching the live video, would love to help them with their stage presence – so important. Guys, it’s worth spending the $5,000 or so to have a Hollywood stage presence. Compare what Mitchel Musso is doing; or, shudder, Honor Society. Don’t change your sound, but please, change your stage wardrobe – except for the naked drummer there. Of course, I’m thinking that’s an early video and rough. Sure they’re fantastic now. If not, I could help!

Was all set to dismiss Emily Osment’s All the Right Wrongs. First, her record label publicity department took a week to get back to me. Second, they blew off credential requests for a Tween Music blog in the blogosphere top five percent. So we’re not the New York Times. Really, how long ago did a Tween read the NYT’s?

Would have loved to seen her at Los Angeles’ House of Blues, but her record label decided against letting me in. Would have been the second time in one week seeing her. Was going to pay, but the label’s attitude turned me off and was ready to totally dismiss Osment.

This morning I heard tracks from the new EP. I love her voice. She utilizes the Hollywood/Disney formula of pop. It is time for SOMEONE to transgress this and transport us into the second decade of the 21st Century as Jimi Hendrix ushered in the 1970s with something brand new.

Wish Ms. Osment luck, but my experience with her record label makes me wonder. We’ll see.

Watch this Selena Gomez video. First, it demonstrates teamwork on the part of the band. That's why being in a band is good for teenagers. Not everyone is going to be the football star, so being in a band, even the school marching band, teaches teamwork.

Also, notice the monitor/earplugs she uses. Nothing worse than a reformed anything. I have major hearing loss (gone in one ear forever). Use protection when you play; or go to concerts and shows! Don't take those babies with you. They can stay with family or friends.
